IWA Show 2016 – Report One

The IWA Show 2016 runs from March 4 – 7 in Nuremberg, Germany. Actually, it’s official title is IWA Outdoor Classics, but everyone just calls it IWA.

IWA is a trade-only show for the shooting sports industry, much like the SHOT Show in the USA. It’s always held in the south German city of Nuremberg, but the IWA Show 2016 is the first one I’ve ever attended, although I’ve been going to the SHOT Show for more than 10 years. So IWA is a new experience for me and I hope that you’ll find our HAM reports interesting!

Compared to the SHOT Show, IWA features relatively more airguns and airgun companies. Indeed, there are several airgun companies here that are not represented in the US market at all. IWA is also less frantic than the SHOT Show. There’s less people per square yard and that means that the exhibitors and attendees are able to have a lot of quality time together to discuss business.

As we’re in Germany right now, it seems logical to start with a report on the “Home Team” – some German airgun companies.

Umarex is a major international player in the airgun world, of course. And it has a huge presence at IWA with an enormous booth that’s one of the largest in the show. Of course, Umarex has a slew of new airgun products at the IWA Show 2016. Below, Ulrich Eichstaedt of Umarex proudly shows us the new Walther LGU Varmint model.

Behind Uli are two new Walther PCP air rifles. The Torminathor is available in both .177 and .22 calibers with a maximum muzzle energy of up to 29.5 Ft/Lbs. The similar-looking Walther Maximathor is in .22 and .25 calibers – the maximum muzzle energy is up too 55 FT/Lbs, so this gun packs a considerable punch.

Of course, many of the new models that were shown at the SHOT Show just a few weeks ago are also given their European launch at IWA. But the European manufacturers also like to keep back a few new models for their worldwide debut at IWA.

One of these is the breakbarrel Colt M4, an officially-licensed airgun version of the famous military rifle. It’s another Umarex product, of course.

Umarex also showed some new CO2 replica air pistols, including this Smith & Wesson M+P model in flat dark earth.

And there’s this interesting “cutaway” Colt 1911 model. Umarex had several new cutaway air pistols like this at the IWA Show 2016, they’re fully-functioning products that will be sold like this and not just exhibition samples.

Meanwhile, over at Diana, Markus Gluck showed me this beautiful Diana 340 N-Tech Luxus air rifle. Just look at the tiger-striping on that stock!

Diana, of course, had several more new models to show, including an unusual – for them – tactical version of the LP8 air pistol.

Finally, for today, we take a look at the Feinwerkbau booth. Just look at all those beautiful precision target air rifles!

And then there was the new Feinwerkbau P8X competition air pistol. This features the ultimate in adjustability! I lost count of the incredible number of elements of this gun that can be adjusted simply and easily with an Allen wrench to achieve the perfect fit to the shooter.

Apart from an adjustable trigger, the hand grip can be adjusted in a huge number of ways and the sights can even be deliberately rotated around the barrel to compensate for the shooter’s cant when holding the pistol. There’s also adjustable barrel weights, a dry firing capability and more. Phew!
