Benjamin Maximus Q&As
Given the amazing, sub-$200 price of the new Benjamin Maximus PCP air rifle, it’s not surprising that HAM has received many questions about this new air rifle. Most of these questions are asking about how the Maximus compares to the Benjamin Discovery. HAM will be undertaking a full test review of the Maximus. But, meanwhile, here are some Benjamin Maximus Q&As.

BENJAMIN MAXIMUS AIR RIFLE
Benjamin Maximus Q&As #1. Isn’t the Maximus really just the Discovery in a synthetic stock?
The answer is no.
Although the HAM team has not yet pulled the Maxiumus apart – we’re waiting until after the full HAM test review to do this – it’s clear from the shot curve shown above that the .22 caliber Maximus has a significantly different performance to the Discovery. As you can see from the graph, the Benjamin Maximus has a lower maximum muzzle velocity, but a far more usable shot curve. The muzzle velocity does not fall as precipitously as the Benjamin Discovery and this will give much improved practical accuracy when shooting the Maximus over the Discovery.
Note that this shot curve was obtained with both air rifles shooting 14.35 Grain JSB Exact Jumbo Express Diabolo pellets. In other words, these are “real world” numbers, not some crazy muzzle velocities from alloy pellets that don’t actually hit the target!
The HAM team’s conclusion is that the Maximus has a different valve from the Discovery. That would explain the shot curve.
Benjamin Maximus Q&As #2. Will the Maximus stock fit the Discovery?
The Maximus stock will fit a Discovery. However, you will need to move forward the barrel band from its existing location on the Discovery as the Benjamin Maximus stock is longer.
The Disco wood stock fits the Maximus with no problems. However, the Discovery and Maximus have different stock screw lengths – the Maximus is longer – so a new stock screw will also be required.
Benjamin Maximus Q&As #3. Is the Maximus barrel the same as the Discovery?
No. The Maximus barrel is 2 1/2-inches longer than that fitted to the Discovery. The overall length of the Maximus is 2-inches longer than that of the Discovery as the Disco barrel is extended by the front sight mount. Barrel diameters are the same. Obviously the Maximus has a simpler (cheaper) front sight, although the rear sights are the same on both air rifles.
This makes the Maximus look MUCH longer than the Discovery, even though the actual difference in length is quite small.
(Don’t ask me why the Disco front sight mount looks purple in the photographs – it’s one of those digital camera things!)
Benjamin Maximus Q&As #4. But the actions are very similar aren’t they?
Yes. As you can see from the following photograph…
So there’s the answers to the most common Benjamin Maximus Q&As that the HAM team has received. There will be more to be covered in the future HAM test review. Stay tuned!
