Let’s Look At The Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec BB Pistol

The Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec BB Pistol has been a strong seller for Air Venturi. And when you take a close look at it, it’s not hard to discover why!

Currently selling at a very competitive $109.99 at Pyramyd Air, this is an extremely faithful replica of the government-issue centerfire original. So the price is definitely right, so is the size, weight and feel.

At a shooting weight of 2 Lbs 2 Oz and an overall length of 8.6 Inches, this 1911 certainly feels just like the firearm. It looks like it, too. The only exceptions are the obligatory airgun-specific white printing on the sides of the slide and the shiny chrome barrel bushing at the muzzle end.

Otherwise, this BB gun is beautifully-finished in a flat matte black. The Springfield Armory logo is prominently displayed on both the right side of the slide…

…and the pistol grip. The grips are actually synthetic, but they look remarkably like real “tree wood”, having strong checkering and appropriate  “grain” patterns – as can be seen from the photograph below.

Another strong benefit for many pistol aficionados is that this Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec BB Pistol can be field-stripped. Unfortunately the Air Venturi instruction manual does not provide instructions for doing so, however anyone who knows how to field-strip a centerfire 1911 will soon work it out.

Field-stripping is not 100% identical to the firearm, but it’s very close, as you can see from the photograph below.

This 1911 BB pistol has a blowback action that gives a strong effect, particularly with a new 12 Gram CO2 cartridge installed. The slide really moves back for the full travel. OK, so a BB gun will never kick exactly like a .45 ACP, but it still does a creditable job and the recoil is fun to handle!

With such a long, realistic blowback action, you can expect accuracy, shot count and muzzle velocity to be average. This is inevitable given the limited energy available from the single CO2 cartridge that powers this 1911. For further background, you can read this HAM story that explains why.

Although this is an informal review of the Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec BB Pistol , it’s clear that this is an outstanding model and great value for money!
